The Italian Coast Guard is an institution comprising 11,000 men and women stationed across more than 280 local commands. With the support of its air and naval units and specialized professionals, it carries out its many duties. These responsibilities include search and rescue at sea, ensuring the safety of navigation and maritime transport, protecting the marine environment, and overseeing the fishing industry. Its work extends across Italy's seas, coastal areas, and major lakes.
The year 2025 marks the 160th anniversary of the Italian Coast Guard. The Corps of Port Captaincies was founded in Florence, the then-capital of Italy, on July 20, 1865.
