11 films from the Venice Film Festival at the Golden Globe Awards

The VPB supported projects VERMIGLIO by Maura del Pero and FLOW by Gints Zilbalodis have been nominated in different categories. A total of 20 nominations for films or projects stemming from the Venice Film Festival. 

Nominations were announced yesterday for the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. In the list of nominees, eleven films were presented as world premieres at the Venice International Film Festival of La Biennale di Venezia: Vermiglio by Maura Delpero, presented at the Venice Gap-Financing Market in 2023, the Golden Lion film The Room Next Door by Pedro Almodóvar, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice by Tim Burton, The Brutalist by Brady Corbet, September 5 – The Day Terror Went Live by Tim Fehlbaum, Queer by Luca Guadagnino, Maria by Pablo Larraín, Hit Man by Richard Linklater, Babygirl by Haluina Reijn, I’m Still Here by Walter Salles, and the series Disclaimer by Alfonso Cuarón, obtaining 20 nominations overall. La Biennale wishes to extend its congratulations to all the nominated personalities and productions.

In particular, Vermiglio by Maura Delpero, Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the 81st Venice Film Festival and presented at the Venice Gap-Financing Market during the Venice Production Bridge in 2023, won a nomination for best motion picture – non-English language. The former Venice Gap-Financing Market project FLOW by Gints Zilbalodis, presented during the Venice Production Bridge in 2022, has been nominated as Best Animated Motion Picture.

Seven nominations were received by the film that won the Silver Lion Award for Best Director at the 81st Venice Film Festival The Brutalist by Brady Corbet: best motion picture – drama, best director, best screenplay (Brady Corbet, Mona Fastvold), best performance by a male actor in a motion picture – drama (Adrien Brody), best performance by a female actor in a supporting role (Felicity Jones), best performance by a male actor in a supporting role (Guy Pearce), best original score (Daniel Blumberg).

The series Disclaimer by Alfonso Cuarón received three nominations: best miniseries, best performance by a female actor in a limited series (Cate Blanchett), best performance by an actor in a limited series (Kevin Kline).

I’m Still Here by Walter Salles, which won an award in Venice for best screenplay, received two Golden Globe nominations: best motion picture – Non-English language and Fernanda Torres best performance by a female actor in a motion picture - drama.

Among the other films premiered at the 81st Venice Film Festival, one nomination each was received by the Golden Lion film The Room Next Door by Pedro Almodóvar (Tilda Swinton for best performance by a female actor in a motion picture), Beetlejuice Beetlejuice by Tim Burton (cinematic and box office achievement), September 5 – The Day Terror Went Live by Tim Fehlbaum (best motion picture - drama), Queer by Luca Guadagnino (Daniel Craig best performance by an actor in a motion picture - drama), Maria by Pablo Larraín (Angelina Jolie best performance by a female actor in a motion picture - drama), Babygirl by Haluina Reijn (Nicole Kidman, winner of the Coppa Volpi in Venice – best performance by a female actor in a motion picture - drama), as well as Hit Man by Richard Linklater (Glen Powell, best performance by a male actor in a motion picture – musical or comedy) that was presented at the 80th Venice Film Festival in 2023.
